Former Toccoa resident and Whitman Street High School graduate Roy Mayfield has worn many hats in his lifetime.
His list of accomplishments includes that of obtaining a patent for one of his inventions and adding equipment during the renovation of the Boys & Girls Club on Whitman Street.
His invention is that of a gutter holder.
Mayfield said the invention allows only one person to accomplish installing rain gutters on a building.
“The invention relates to a device for temporary holding a gutter in place during the installation,” Mayfield wrote in a background piece for the invention.
It continues, “Gutters come in standard lengths 10, 20, and 40 feet lengths.
“The gutters are of thin wall material, usually aluminum or plastic, and therefore easily been during shipment, handling, or installation.
“In a typical installation job, several men would be required to support the gutter during its installation.”
Mayfield recently visited the Toccoa Military Museum to include one of his gutter holders in its collection.
Mayfield is a graduate of Whitman Street High School which is now the location of the Boys & Girls Club.
When the building was renovated, it did not include kitchen equipment.
Mayfield took the initiative to provide that equipment in 2005 and was able to get and install a commercial range, warner, pantry rack, and three sinks.
The Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Georgia recognized Mayfield’s contribution in a 2005 letter.
“The Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Georgia offers a heartfelt thanks to Mr. Mayfield for his devotion to his hometown and Alma Mater,” the letter from club executive director Mary M. Rice states.
“We felt that the UAW/General Motors family should be aware of the contribution from one of its members,” the letter states.
